Times are changing #3

In quote #3 there is discussion about the content of literature intended for young adult readers.  "Sexuality, sexual violence, gang violence, homosexuality, profanity, and violent crimes against children are increasingly and graphically represented in many of these books." Although I am not saying this is a good thing; it's reality.  The world today, not only books, is leaning more towards these issues with each passing year.  Simply flip on the news from time to time or open a newspaper and these are the topics that constantly get top billing.  I am not convinced that there is more of this going on in the world, it's just getting more publicity.  Due to that fact I think it is incredibly important to allow young adults the chance to be exposed to these issues in the setting of the classroom where ideas can be put out in the open and discussed in an academic setting.  Would parents prefer that their child is first exposed to these issues in the hallways of the school?  If they choose to not allow their child to be exposed to these matters in book form, they better be prepared to have discussions with their child similar to those that would be conducted in a classroom around these matters.
